The natural borax prepared as crystals, mainly containing sodium tetraborate.
Appearing as prismatic, cylindrical or granular crystals, varying in size,
colourless, transparent, or whitish semi-opaque, with glassy luster, sometimes
light yellow or greyish, effloresing to white opaque powder on long storage.
Light in weight, brittle in texture. Enlarged as cotton wadding and then
becoming transparent glassy balls when bumt. Sweet and salty in taste,
cool in nature, and attributive to lung and stomach channels.
1. Clear away heat and toxic material, and as antiseptic (external use):
For aphthae, thrush, sorethroat, otopyorrhea, pulpitis, pustulosis, and
cervical erosion, used together with Borneolum Syntheticum, Cinnabaris
and Natril Sulfas Exsiccatus; for conjunctivitis and nebula, used as eyewash;
for mycotic vaginitis, mixed with Borneolum Syntheticum as paste for topical
2. Clear away heat and eliminate phlegm (oral use): For cough of lungheat
type and of deficiency-fire type, whooping cough, etc. In addition, used
for lumbar sprain by putting some fried borax on the Yinjiao point (Du
28) which located near both inner canthi.
It is a weak bacteriostatic, and is non-irritative.
