The pericarpium of Papaver somniferum L. family Papaveraceae.
The complete pericarpium appearing elliptical or ovate, cm long, 3-6 cm
in diameter. Outer surface yellow-white, smooth, slightly bright, with
scars; apex with discoidal style remnant, the upper part of which divided
into 8-14 radially arranged stigmas; base with remnant fruit stalks; inner
surface with diaphragm and small brown-dark tuberdes. Sour and astringent
in taste, slightly cold in nature, slightly toxic, and attributive to
lung, kidney and large intestine channels.
1. Astringe the intestine, relieve diarrhea and alleviate pain: For chronic
diarrhea and dysentery, or those accompanied with ab dominal pain.
Astringe the lung and relieve cough: For chronic cough with little expectoration.
1. Slowing the rate of breathing and depressing the cough reflex, and
exerting an antitussive effect.
2. Relaxing the smo9th muscles of gastrointestinal tract and trachea.
3. Being an analgesic acting on the central nervous system.
Contraindicated for cough and diarrhea with sthenic evil.
