Seed of Myristica fragrans Houtt., family Myristicaceae.

Characteristics
Seed ovate or elliptical, about 3 cm long, and 2 cm in diameter, Surface grey-yellow, with reticulate marks, the preparations covered with white lime powder. A raphe with longitudinal groove presenting on one side; a hilum at the broader end, and a chalaza at the other end. Hard in texture. Prepared as thin pieces, section showing dull brown perisperrn extending inwards and crossing with white endosperm forming betel-nut like patterns. Acrid in taste, warm in nature, and attributive to spleen stomach and large intestine channels.

Indication
1. Astringe the intestine and relieve diarrhea: For prolonged diarrhea due to deficiency-cold of spleen and stomach, used together with Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae and Rhizoma Zingiberis; for diarrhea before dawn due to deficiency-cold of spleen and kidney, used together with Fructus Psoraleae and Fructus Schisandrac.
2. Warm the middle-jiao and alleviate pain: For stomach-cold with stagnation of vital energy manifested as abdominal pain, poor appetite and vomiting, used with Radix Aucklandiae together; and those complicated with deficiency of spleen-energy, used together with Atractylodis Macrocephakie and Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae.

Pharmacological Action
1. Its volatile oil stimulates gastrointestinal tract and expels wind.
2. Oral administration of its powder (1.9g/kg) or hypodermic injection of its volatile oil (0.12 ml/kg) may cause serious damage of cat's liver, leading to coma and death within 24 hours.

Administration Decoction: 3-10g.
