The horn of the male beast of Cervus nippon Temminck or C etaphus L.,
family Cerridae.
Characteristics
Horn
of C. nippon: Cylindrical, branching, one branch bifurcated or two branches
trifurcated. The top of the branches enlarged and obtuse, 20-30 cm high,
4-5 cm in diameter. Surface yellow-brown, densely covered with fme hairs.
Section of the base yellow-white, with small pores. Prepared as round
thin pieces, whitish even and soft. Unplesant in odour. Horn of C. elaphus:
Thicker than the former, surface grey-brown. Section deeper in colour,
with larger pores. Prepared pieces dark yellow and harder, some even osseous.
Sweet and salty in taste, warm in nature, and attributive to kidney and
liver channels.
Indication
Invigorate kidney-yang, supplement essence and blood and strengthen the
tendons and bones: For deficiency of kidney-yang manifested as cold limbs,
fatigue, backache, impotence, emission and frequent micturition, enuresis,
sterility, metrorrhagja or leucorrhagia; for hypofunction of kidney with
shortness of breath and dyspnea; for yang-deficiency and insufficiency
of essence and blood manifested as flaccidity
of extremities, or maldevelopment, delayed walking, delayed teeth eruption
and delayed closure of fontanel in infants, or unhealed skin lesion&
Pharmacological
Action
1. It is a tonic, promoting gastrointestinal peristalsis, accelerating
the healing of ulcer or wound, and increasing the level of red blood cell,
hemoglobin and reticulocyte.
2. Increasing myocardial contractility, heart rate and cardic output.
3. Its tincture exerts a gonadotropic effect.
Administration
Pill or powder: 0.25-0.5g bid or tid.
