Rhizome of Dioscorea opposita Thunb., family Dioscoreaceae.
terete or long cambiform, somewhat curved, 15-30 cm long, 1.5-6.0 cm in
diameter. Surface with yellowish white cork, and appearing white when
the cork is peeled off. Prepared as oblique cutting pieces, white, farinaceous,
even, and without striae. Sweet in taste, mild in nature, and attributive
to spleen, lung and kidney channels.
1. lnvigorate the spleen and stomach: For deficiency of spleen-energy
and stomach-energy with poor appetite, fatigue, loose stools or chronic
diarrhea, leucorrhagia, etc.; for febrile diseases with consumption of
body fluid or deficiency of spleen-yin and stomach-yin with poor appetite,
thirst, dry tongue, diabetes, etc.
2.Invigorate the lung: For lung-deficiency with chronic cough or tuberculosis;
for deficiency of lung and kidney with dyspnea and chronic cough, used
together with Fructus Corni and Fructus Schisandrae.
Invigorate the kidney and preserve the essence: For kidney-deficiency
manifested as emission, enuresis, frequent micturition and leucorrhagia.
Its decoction (1:1280) can promote the phagocytosis of leukocyte in vitro.
