Source
Fruit of Ziziphus jujuba Mill., family Rhamnaceae.
Characteristics
Fruit elliptical, 2.0-3.5 cm long. Exocarp thin, dull red, slightly lustrous,
with
irregular and deep wrinkles; mesocarp fleshy, soft, brownish yellow. Nucleus
cambiform. Sweet in taste, warm in nature, and attributive to spleen and
stomach channels.
Indication
1. Invigorate the spleen and stomach: For deficiency of spleen and stomach
with poor appetite, fatigue and loose stools, usually used together with
Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephakie and Rhizoma
Zingiberis Recens.
2. Nourish blood and calm the mind: For blood-deficiency with insomnia,
vexation and restlessness, usually used together with Radix Glycyrrhizae
and Fructus Tritici Levis (Decoction of Glycyrrhizae, Ttitici Levis and
Ziziphi Jujubae).
3.
Moderate the potency of drugs: For counteracting the toxicity or side
effects of potent drugs, such as Flos Genkwa, Radix Euphorbiae Pekinensis,
Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae, etc. Recently, also used for anaphylactoid
purpura and bronchial asthma.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Oral administration increases the level of cAMP and decreases the level
of cGMP in plasma and in leukocytes.
2. Protect the liver from damage.
3. Hypotensive.
Administration
Decoction:
10-30g.
