Source
Herb of Setaginella doederleinii Hieron., family Selaginellaceae.
Characteristics
A ramous creeping herb with adventitious roots on the branches. Leaves
squamelliform,
deep green, sessile, growing along the branches; middle leaves bifarious,
oblong spreading towards the top of the branch; lateral leaves bifarious,
ovate-oblong, spreading laterally. Strobilus tetragonal, usually two strobiluses
growing at the top of the branch. Slightly sweet in taste, mild in nature,
and attributive to lung, liver and stomach channels.
Indication
1. Clear away heat and dampness, promote blood circulation and remove
blood stasis: For jaundice of dampness-heat type and abdominal mass. Recently
used for acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, cholecysitis, etc., also
for diarrhea, desentery and leucorrhagia of dampness-heat type, cough
of lung-heat type, sorethroat, silicosis, and tumors such as lung cancer,
nasopharyngeal carcinoma, chorionic epithelioma, tumor of the digestive
tract, etc.
2.
Stop bleeding: For hematemesis, hemafecia, hemoptysis and epistaxis. External
use for bleeding affer trauma and after separation of umbilical cord in
infants.
Pharmacological
Action
1. inhibiting sarcoma180 and cervix carcinoma14 in mice and L16 cells
isolated from human liver cancer.
2. Promoting the adrenocortical function in mice.
3. Promoting metabolism and reticuloendothelial function.
Administration
Decoction: 15-30g
Tablet (each containing 3 g of crude herb): 6-9 tablets tid.
Ampoule (2 ml contalning 10g of crude herb): 1 ampoule IM tid or 14-20
ml added in glucose solution IV for drips once daily.
