Fructus Quisqualis
Source
Fruit of Quisqualis indica L., family Combretaceae.
Characteristics
Fruit
elliptical, with 5 longitudinally ridges, 2.5-4.0 cm long and 1-2 cm in
diameter in the middle. Surface purple-brown, smooth and lustrous; the
upper end narrow and acuminulate, base slightly obtuse; the top of ridge
sharp. Cross section showing five-angular star shaped with a round ovary
in the middle, each of which containing one seed. Sweet in taste, slightly
warm in nature, and attributive to spleen and stomach channels.
Indication
Kill parasite and relieve dyspepsia: For ascariasis and malnutrition caused
by ascariasis, trichomoniasis intestinalis, and oxyuriasis.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Potassium quisqualata is the effective component for treating oxyuriasis
and ascariasis.
2. Anti-dermatomycotic.
Administration
Prepared as powder after fried.
For ascariasis: 1 g for 1 year of age daily for 1-3 days, the maximal
daily dosage
should not exceed 12g for children and 15g for adults.
For trichomoniasis intestinalis: 1.5g for 1 year of age daily taken 1
or 2 doses, the maximal daily dosage should not exceed 12g for children
and 15g for adults.
For oxyuriasis: 2-5 pieces of fruit for children and 5-10 pieces for adults,
3 times daily for 15 days and then continue after an interval of one week;
also taken as decoction.
Caution
This medicine may cause hiccup, vomiting and dizziness.
