Semen Raphani
Source
Seed of Raphanus sativus L, family Cruciferae.
Characteristics
Seed flat-ovate or elliptical, 2.5-5.0 mm long, 2-3 mm broad; spermoderm
yellow-brown to red-brown; with a round hilum at one end, and several
longitudinal grooves on one side. Acrid and sweet in taste, mild in nature,
and attributive to lung, spleen and stomach channels.
Indication
1. Promote digestion and relieve dyspepsia: For serious cases of dyspepsia
with chest upset, abdominal distension, eructation, acid regurgitation,
constipation, or diarrhea; for constipation of sthenia heat origin, used
together with Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, Natni Sulfa: and Fructus Aurantii
Immatunis; for habitual constipation, single use or mixed with honey.
2. Eliminate phlegm and descend the adverse-rising energy: For productive
cough and dyspnea, usually used together with Semen Sinapis Albae and
Fructus Perillae ( Decoction Containing Three Kinds of Seed for the Aged).
3. Lower blood pressure: For hypertension.
Pharmacological
Action
1.
Raphanin, one of its active components, inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus
and Bacillus coli in vitro.
2. Intravenous injection of its aqueous extract exerts hypotensive effect
in anesthetized rabbits (1.0-4.8g/kg), cats (0.8-1.18g/kg) and dogs (0.48-1.20g/kg).
3. Anti-inflammatory.
Administration
Decoction: 6-12g, 15-30g for constipation of stheniasyndrome; 50-70g
for hypertension.
Powder: 9-12g for habitual constipation.
