Radix Asteris


The root and rhizome of Aster tataricus L.f., family Compositae

Rhizome appearing as irregular masses, 2-6 cm long. Apex with remnant of stem base and petiole, base with remnant of one rigid tap root which is surrounded by clustered fibrous roots, 3-15 cm long, 3 mm in diameter. Surface purple black, with fine longitudinal wrinkles. Roots often gathered as a plait. Soft in texture. Prepared as fragments. Acrid and bitter in taste, warm in nature, and attributive to lung channeL

Eliminate phlegm, relieve cough, nourish the lung and lower the adverse-rising energy: For non-productive cough with dyspnea, and chronic cough due to lung-deficiency with bloody sputum; also for cough of exogenous wind-cold type.

Pharmacological Action
1. Inhibiting the growth of some gram-negative bacteria and influenzae virus in vitro.
2. Its benzene and methyl alcohol extract exert an expectorant effect.

Administrtion Decoction: 3-9g.
