The root and rhizome of Aster tataricus L.f., family Compositae
Characteristics
Rhizome appearing as irregular masses, 2-6 cm long. Apex with remnant
of
stem base and petiole, base with remnant of one rigid tap root which is
surrounded by clustered fibrous roots, 3-15 cm long, 3 mm in diameter.
Surface purple black, with fine longitudinal wrinkles. Roots often gathered
as a plait. Soft in texture. Prepared as fragments. Acrid and bitter in
taste, warm in nature, and attributive to lung channeL
Indition
Eliminate
phlegm, relieve cough, nourish the lung and lower the adverse-rising energy:
For non-productive cough with dyspnea, and chronic cough due to lung-deficiency
with bloody sputum; also for cough of exogenous wind-cold type.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Inhibiting the growth of some gram-negative bacteria and influenzae
virus in vitro.
2. Its benzene and methyl alcohol extract exert an expectorant effect.
Administrtion
Decoction: 3-9g.
