The mesexine shaved from the stem of Lophatherum gracile Brongn., family
Gramineae.
Characteristics
Elongated strips, somewhat involute, greenish to yellowish white, with
many
longitudinal fibers. Sweet in taste, cold in nature, and attributive to
lung and stomach channels.
Indication
1. Clear away lung-heat to eliminate phlegm, clear away heart-fire to
relieve vexation: For lung-heat syndrome manifested as cough with yellow
and thick sputum; phlegm-heat syndrome involving the heart manifested
as vexation, feeling of oppression in the chest, insomnia, palpitation,
bitter taste in the mouth, yellowish and greasy fur, or productive cough,
usually used together with Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Rhizoma Pinelliae
and Fructus Aurantii Immaturus.
2. Clear away stomach-heat and relieve vomiting: For vomiting due to phlegm-heat
involving the stomach due to stomach heat, used together with Anetiiae
and Rhizoma Coptidis.
3. Clear away heat to cool the blood: For blood-heat syndrome manifested
as hemoptysis, hematemesis, epistaxis and metrorrhagia, used together
with other drugs of this kind.
Pharmacological
Action
Inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus albus, Bacillus coli and Bacillus
typhi in vitro.
Administration
Decoction:
6-9g.
