The seed (removed off the outer spermoderm) of Ginkgo biloba L., family
Seed ovate or elliptical, 1.5-3.0 cm long. Inner spermoderm, hard, yellow-white,
smooth base with 1-2 round dotted protuberances, maigm ridgy. Kemel oblate
and yellow-green, endosperm thick and soft. Sweet, acrid and astringent
in taste, mild in nature, slightly toxic, and attributive to lung channel.
1. Astringe the lung and relieve dyspnea: For dyspnea and cough, usually
used together with Merba Ephedrae, Semen Armeniacae Amarum and Radix Glycyrrhizae.
2. Clear away turbid substance and decrease frequency of micturition:
For leucorrhagia, white and turbid urine, frequent micturition and nocturnal
neutral nitrogen-free component may cause convulsion and paralysis of
medulla oblongata in mice.
It should be decocted for a longer time. Crude seed or large dosage may
cause poisoning which manifest as vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea,
coma, somnolence, convulsion, fever, dyspnea, cyanosis, etc., or even
death. For moderate toxicosis, decoction of 30g of Ginkgo outer spermoderm
or 60g of Radix Glycyrrhizae, or 0.3g of Moschus may be applied.
