The capitulum of Gomphrena globosa L., family Amaranthaceae.
Characteristics
Inflorescence oblong or spherical, 2.02.5 cm long, composed of numerous
sessile flower, each flower with 3 purple-red dry membranous bracts and
5 perianths. The base of the inflorescence bearing 2 green involucres.
Sweet in taste, mild in nature, and attributive to king and liver channels.
Indication
1. Relieve cough and dyspnea: For cough, dyspnea and whooping cough.
2. Clear away liver-fire to promote visual acuity: For liver-heat syndrome
with redness of the eye, headache and dizziness, and infantile convulsion.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Its decoction or cold-alcoholic infusion is an antiasthmatic.
2. Its volatile oil, fiavones or saponin exerts an expectorant effect.
Administration
Decoction: 3-9g.
