The bulb of Fntillana cirrhosa D. Don, F unibracteata Hsiao et K.C. Hsia
and F. przewalskii Maxim., family Liliaceae.
Characteristics
Bulb cordate or ovate-conical, with an acute apex and a flat base, 0.5- 1.0
cm high. Surface white, with two scale leaves on the outer verticil; two
scale leaves unequal in size, the larger one holding the smaller one with
the exposed part revealing a semilunar shape, or similar in size with
the apex closed together or slightly opened. Fracture surface white and
farinaceous. Sweet and bitter in taste, slightly cold in nature, and attributive
to heart and lung channels.
Indication
1. Nourish the lung, eliminate phlegm and relieve cough: For dry cough
due to yin-deficiency or disorder of internal organs, used together with
Radix Adenophorae Strictae and Radix Ophiopogonis; for cough of phlegm-heat
type with a constitution of yin-deficiency.
2.
Clear away heat, disperse stagnation and relieve carbuncles: As Bulbus
Fritillanae Thunbergii but less potent, especially suitable for those
with yin-deficiency constitution.
Pharmacological
Action
Its active component fritimine can lower blood pressure, inhibit respiration,
increase the level of blood sugar and stimulate the uterus in experimental
animals.
Administration
Decoction: 3-9g.
Powder: 1.0-1.5g bid or tid.
