The vine of clematis armcmdi Franch (Ranunculaceae), Akebia quinata (Thunb.)
Decne. (Lardizaba&zceae) and Anstolochia manshuriensis Kom. (Anstolochiaceae).
Characteristics
A
woody vine. Stem long cylindrical, epidermis yellowish brown, longitudinal
ridges of vascular bundles seen when the epidermis is removed, with enlarged
nodes. Prepared as round pieces, with a thin cortex and thick xylem, yellow-white
in coldur, dividing into 6 or more chrysanthemum-like lobes; xylem ray
thin; vessel pores arranged in concentric rings; pith small or hollowed.
Bitter in taste, cold in nature, and attributive to heart, small intestine
and urinary bladder channels.
Indication
1. Clear away heat, promote. diuresis and relieve stranguria: For edema,
dysuria, strangufla of heat type or caused by urinary stone.
2.
Clear away heart-fire: For heart-heat syndrome with aphthae, irritability,
insomnia and oliguria with reddish urine, usually used together with Radix
Reh,flanniae, Herba Lop hatheri, Radix Glycyrrhizae.
3. Promote menstruation and lactation: For galactostasis, and amenorrhea
due to blood stasis.
4. Activate the joints: For arthralgia of dampness-heat type, immovability
ofjoints.
Pharmacological
Action
Containing potassium salts and exerting diuretic effect.
Administration
Decoction: 3-10g.
