The whole body (viscera discarded) of Bungarus multicinctus multicinctus
Blyth., family Elapidae.
Characteristics
Whole
snake coiled as a rounded disc which is 3-15 cm in diameter, with the
head located at the center and the tail inserted in the mouth. The body
of snake 0.3-2.0 cm in diameter. Dorsal surface black, with many white
transverse lines, and a projecting ridge in the middle, scales fine and
dense; ventral surface yellow-white, scales larger. Stinking in odour.
Sweet and salty in taste, warm in nature, toxic, and attributive to liver
channel.
Indication
1. Expel wind, dredge the channels, relieve muscular spasm: For rheumatism,
especially the intractable cases and those with wandering arthralgia,
numbness of the extremities and muscular spasm; also for apoplexy complicated
by distortion of face and hemiplegia.
2.
Relieve convulsive seizures: For infantile convulsion, tetanus and convulsion
after apoplexy.
3. Expel wind and alleviate itching: For itching induced by scabies, tinea
infection and urticaria.
4. Remove toxic materials: For leprosy, scrofula, and severe skin infections.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Analgesic, sedative.
2. Hypotensive owing to its vasodilative effect.
Administration
Decoction: 3-10g. Powder: 1.0-1.5g.
