Fructus Chaenomelis
Source
Fruit of Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai or C sinensis (Thouin) Koehne,
family Rosaceae.
Characteristics
Fruit
oblong, 4-8 cm long, 1-3 cm thick, purple-brown; outer surface deeply
wrinkled or smooth; margin somewhat involuted; inner surface with a depressed
thin coriaceous ovary wall. Seed numerous, flat-triangular or exfoliated.
Prepared as slices. Sour in taste, warm in nature, and attributive to
liver and spleen channels.
Indication
1. Expel wind-dampness, relax the tendons: For arthralgia of wind-dampness
type manifested as feeling of heaviness and stiffness of extremities and
muscular spasm. Also for beriberi.
2.
Regulate the stomach and eliminate dampness: For vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal
pain and muscular spasm of summer-heat and dampness type, usually used
together with Semen Coicis, Faces Bombycis, Fructus Evodiae, Rhizoma Coptidis,
etc.; also for diarrhea of dampness origin.
3. Promote digestion: For indigestion.
Pharmacological
Action
Its decoction inhibits the development of egg-white induced arthritis
in mice.
Administration
Decoction: 6-12g.
