Radix Sanguisorbae
Source
Root of Sanguisorba officinalis L, family Rosaceae.
Characteristics
Root terete or long cambiform, somewhat curved, 5-20 cm long, 0.3-2.0
cm
in diameter; surface brown-purple to dull red, coarse, longitudinally
wrinkled. Section showing pink or reddish brown in colour; xylem in light
colour, with radial vascular bundles; epidermis with soft fibers. Bitter
and sour in taste, slightly cold in nature, and attributive to liver,
stomach and large intestine channels.
Indication
1. Cool the blood and stop bleeding: For bleeding due to blood-heat, mainly
used for hematemesis, hematuria, hemorrhoids, also for hemoptysis, metrorrhagia,
etc.
2. Clear away heat and toxic materials: For diarrhea and dysentery of
dampness-heat
type. Recently also used for typhoid fever. Topical application may be
adopted for bum, skin infection, eczema, skin erosion.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Its powder is effective for scald in experimental animals.
2. Hemostatic.
3. Inhibiting the growth of various pathogenic bacteria.
Adrninistration
Decoction: 9-15g.
