Source
Root of Cirsium japonicum DC., family Compositae.
Characteristics
Root long-cambiform, 10 cm long, 0.3-0.6 cm in diameter; surface grey- brown,
longitudinally wrinkled; cross section showing thin epidermis, fine gaps
and nearly white xylem. Fragrant in odour. Sweet in taste, cool in nature,
and attributive to liver and spleen channels.
Indication
1. Cool the blood and stop bleeding: For hematuria, metrorrhagia, hemoptysis,
epistaxis, etc. of blood-heat type.
2. Clear away heat and toxic material: For skin infection, acute eczema
and snake bite.
3. Promote diuresis: For edema, dysuria and jaundice.
4. Lower blood pressure: For hypertension.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Its decoction can lower blood pressure.
2. Inhibiting the growth of a-streptococcus.
3. Shortening the bleeding time.
4. Anti-inflammatory.
5. Diuretic.
Administration
Decoction: 10-15g, or 20-60g of fresh herb.
