The whole body of Whitmania pigra (Whitman), and several species of the same family, family Hirudinidae.

Body flat-cambiform, somewhat curve, dorsally convex, ventrally flat, 5-9 cm long. Surface yellowish brown to darkish brown, with striae and spots on the back and many transverse ring nodes arid a small round-anterior sucker and a large posterior sucker. Salty and bitter in taste, mild in nature, and attributive to liver and urinary bladder channels.

1. Remove blood stasis: For blood-stasis syndrome with amenia, abdominal mass, and trauma. Recently, single use for angina pectoris, and for pulmonary heart diseases as subsidiary therapy.
2. Remove nebula to improve visual acuity: Eyedrops for acute conjunctivitis and nebula. Pharmacological Action One of its components, hirudin, is an anticoagulant.

Administration Decoction: 3-6g
Powder: 1.5-3.0g bid or tid. Eyedrops; Infusion of alive leech in three fold amount of honey.

Contraindicated for women during menstruation and pregnancy, and bleeding without blood stasis.
