The immatured spike infructescence of Piper longum L, family Piperaceae.
Characteristics
Spike infructescence cylindrical, formed by many sessile small berries
growing
on the spike-stalk, 1.5-3.0 cm long, 0.3-0.5 cm in diameter. Surface brown-dark,
small berries obliquely and regularly arranged; base with stalks or scars.
Particularly aromatic in odour. Acrid in taste, heat in nature, and attributive
to stomach and large intestine channels.
Indication
Warm the middle jiao, dispel cold and lower the adverse rising energy:
For stomach-cold syndrome with vomiting, hiccup, epigastric and abdominal
pain, diarrhea. Also used for epilepsy; external use for toothache
due to dental caries.
Pharmacological
Action
Its oily extract inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus
dysenteriae.
Administration
Decoction: 2-5g.
External use: Appropriate amount.
