The fruit of Piper nigrum L., family Piperaceae.
Characteristics
Fruit
small globular, 3-5 mm in diameter. Pericarp dark-brown, pulp white, apexes
with style scar, bases with dropped fruit scar. Aromatic in odour. Acrid
in taste, heat in nature, and attributive to stomach and large intestine
channels.
Indication
1, Warm the middle-jiao to increase appetite: For stomach-cold syndrome
with abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia.
2.
Eliminate phlegm: For deficiency-cold of lung and spleen with cough and
thin expectoration, also for epilepsy.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Increasing secretion of digestive and promoting gastrointestinal peristalsis
by oral administration.
2. Piperine is an antipyretic and wind-expelling agent.
Administration
Decoction:
2-4g, crushed before decocting.
Powder: 0.5-1.0g, once to thrice daily.
