Source
The plumule or young leaf of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., family Nymphaeaceae.
Characteristics
The
sample appearing as fme strips, 1.0-1.5 cm long, about 2 mm in diameter;
the lower portion being the radicel, yellow-white; the upper portion bearing
two green young leaves, one long arid the other short, curved in arrow
shape, but the tip inverted. Bitter in taste, cold in nature, and attributive
to heart and kidney channels.
Indication
Clear away heart-fire and relieve vexation: For hyperactivity of heart-fire
manifested high fever, restlessness, coma, delirium, and insomnia, or
hypertension with such manifestations.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Its decoction can lower blood pressure.
2. Its alkaloids are cardiotonic.
3. Its component, demethyl coclaurine, may relax smooth muscles.
Administration
Decoction: 1.5-6.0g.
