Foliurn Nelumbinis
Source
The leaf of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn, family Nymphaeaceae.
Characteristics
leaves rounded, sometimes folded into semi-circular or folding-fan shaped,
20-50 cm in diameter, margin entire, with about 21 radiate midrib veins,
bearing remnants of petiole bases in the middle of the dorsal side. The
dried samples yellow-green. Slightly bitter in taste, mild in nature,
and attributive to liver and spleen channels.
Indication
1.
Clear away summer-heat, promote the production of body fluid to quench
thirst: For summer-heat syndrome with thirst and headache, and diarrhea
of summer heat-dampness type.
2. Life up lucid-yang: For diarrhea due to spleen-deficiency, used together
with Rhizoma Atractylodis Macmcephalae and Rhizoma Dioscoreae.
3. Disperse blood stasis and stop bleeding: For hematemesis, epistaxis,
hemoptysis, hematuria, metrorrhagia, etc.
4. Reduce the level of blood-fat: For hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia
and angina pectoris.
Pharmacological
Action
An active component nuciferine exerts antispasmodic effect on smooth muscles.
Administration
Decoction: 6-12g. For reducing blood-fat: 50-150g.
