Rhizoma Belamcandae
Source
Rhizome of Belamcanda chinensis (L.) DC., family Indaceae.
Characteristics
Rhizome irregularly nodose, 3-10 cm long, 1-2 cm in diameter. Outer surface
yellow-brown, with dense stem nodal rings, and several discoidal stem
scars or relic stem at the upper part, and relic roots or root scars at
the lower part. Section showing yellow and granular. Bitter in taste,
cold in nature, and attributive to lung channel.
Indication
Clear away heat and toxic material, eliminate sputum and ease the throat:
For sorethroat, productive cough and shortness of breath due to phlegm
heat,
scrofula. External use for padly field dermatitis.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Bacteriostatic.
2. Its alcoholic extract can lower blood pressure, accelerate respiration
and increase pulse rate in rabbits.
3. Oral use of alcoholic extract increases saliva secretion in rabbits.
Administration
Decoction: 6-9g. Topical washing: 60-120g boiled in water with a small
amount of salt.
