Herb of Portulaca oleracea L., family Portulacaceae.
Characteristics
A
creeping herb. Stem thin and small, 30 cm long. leaves opposite or alternate,
obovate, fleshy, apex truncate or retuse; margin entire. Flower small,
yellow, and growing from the top of the branches. Capsule conical. Sour
in taste, cold in nature, and attributive to large intestine and liver
channels.
Indication
1. Clear away heat and toxic material: For diarrhea, dysentery and leucorrhagia
of dampness-heat type, hemorrhoids, carbuncle, etc.
2.
Expel dampness and alleviate itching: For eczema, dermatitis, herpes zoster,
flat wart, vitiligo, etc.
3. Alleviate uterine bleeding: For metrorrhagia and menorrhea.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Bacteno static effect on Bacillus coli, Baccillus dysenteriae and Bacillus
typhoid.
2. Its fresh juice contains potassium salt and is a hysterotonics.
Administration
Decoction: 30-60g; appropriate amount for external use.
