Leaf of Ilex chinensis Sims., family Aquifoliaceae.
Characteristics
Leaf long-elliptical, 6-12 cm long, 2.0-3.5 cm wide; apex acuminate, base
cuneate, margin sparsely serrate, glabrous, lustrous; dorsal surface light-coloured;
petiole 1 cm long; coriaceous. Delicately fragrant. Bitter and astringent
in taste, cool in nature, and attributive to heart and lung channels.
Indication
Clear away heat and toxic material, external use for promoting tissue
regeneration and as astringent: External use for burn, ulcer of the lower
extremities, eczema, ulcer of leprosy, carbuncle, furuncle, etc.; Oral
use for acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, acute baciliary dysentery,
urinary infection, etc.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Its decoction, injection or its active components, protocatechuic acid
and protocatechuic aldehyde possess broad-pectrum antibacterial effect,
especially on Staphylococcus arueus.
2. Promote scabbing and antiphlogistic for burn and scald.
3. Its decoction or its component protocatechuic aldehyde decreases coronary
resistance and increases coronary flow.
4. Protocatechuic acid increases anoxia in rats.
5. Antipyretic.
Administration
Decoction: 15-30g; appropriate arnount for external use. Table: 4-6
tablets tid. Injection: 4ml IM bid.
